Leona Maguire becomes the first Irish golfer to be selected on the Solheim Cup team that played the United States at Inverness Club, Ohio from 4th to 6th September 2021.
The darling of Slieve Russell Golf Club Leona Maguire equalled the lowest round in Major History when on Sunday 25th July 2021 she shot a stunning 61 when she shot 10-birdies on the final day at the Amundi Evian Championship in France. She rattled of 4-birdies in a row on the closing holes.
Well done Leona not only are Slieve Russell proud of you but also the entire Irish golfing community.
I would pay no better tribute to the course at the Slieve Russell, than to say, the more often I play it, the more it reminds me of Gleneagles" so said Christy O'Connor "Himself" of this fine golf course.
The 18-hole Championship Golf Course was opened in 1992 and has since become one of the top ranking courses Ireland. It is now being compared to some great worldwide. 1996 venue for Smurfit Irish P.G.A. annually hosts Quinn-Direct Charity Pro-Am.
Forming part of the 300-acre estate, including 50-acres lakes, unique style Slieve Russell course is sensitively wrapped around lakes and drumlins County Cavan landscape. Multiple tee positions facilitate all categories golfers with championship tees demanding strategic shot making.
Designed by Paddy Merrigan and measuring 7,053 yards, off the blue tees with a standard scratch of 74. Slieve Russell's has to be 529 yards 13th dog leg left tee shot over Lough Rud lake in play all way green.
The clubhouse facilities include the Summit Bar and Restaurant, offering magnificent panoramic views over golf course. Other 5-bay floodlit driving range Slieve Russell Hotel provides for every creature comfort golfer can require. This course is a tribute to the foresight of Sean Quinn had when he undertake the development at Ballyconnell.

Seamus Cullen and Shane McDermott were selected on the Ulster Interprovincial team played at PGA Slieve Rusell Golf Club from 3rd to 5th July 2024. Others on the team were Aaron Marshall (Lisburn Golf Club), Colm Campbell (Warrenpoint Golf Club), Adam Buchanan (Royal Portrush Golf Club), Luke Kelly (Dunfanaghey Golf Club), Ross Latimer (Clandeboye Golf Club) and Dwayne Mallon (Dungannon Golf Club) they were captained by Peter Waddell from Knock Golf Club.
Slieve Russell Golf Club reached the All-Ireland Quarter-Finals of the Barton Shield at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club on Thursday 7th September 2023 when they lost out to Galway Golf Club by 7-holes.
In the top match, Seamus Cullen with Dillon Beirne lost their match against Stephen Brady with Eoin Power by the minimum and in the bottom match, Shane McDermott with Charlie Smyth lost their match against Liam Nolan with Dave Cunningham by 6-holes.
Slieve Russell Golf Club won the Final of the South Ulster Barton Shield at Dunmurry Golf Club on Sunday 16th July 2023 when they beat Belvoir Park Golf Club by 6-Holes.
Charlie Smyth was selected on the Irish team to play in the McGregor Trophy at Hunstanton Golf Club on 18th to 20th July 2023, the others on the squad were John Doyle (Fota Island Golf Club), Evan Hogg (Belvoir Park Golf Club), Scott McCabe (Massereen Golf Club), Evan Monaghan (Tullamore Golf Club) and Isaac Oliver (Ballinasloe Golf Club) they were coached by Ian Kearney and managed by Peter Waddell.
Shane McDermott was selected on the Ulster Interprovincial Championship team at Moyvalley Golf Club from Tuesday 29th August to Thursday 31st August 2023.
Other members of the team were Fionn Dobbin (Malone Golf Club), Lewis Gowdy (Bangor Golf Club), Cian Harkin (Letterkenny Golf Club), James Hewitt (Tandragee Golf Club), Darcy Hogg (Belvoir Park Golf Club), Jordan Hood (Galgorm Castle Golf Club) and Rory Williamson (Holywood Golf Club).

Slieve Russell Golf Club won the Ulster Final of the Irish Junior Cup when they beat Roe Park by 3 matches to 2 matches at Balmoral Golf Club on the 11th August 2013.
They made the relatively short trip to Royal Tara Golf Club to participate in the National Deciders. They met Connaught Champions Westport Golf Club in the All-Ireland Semi-Final on Wednesday 17th September. They were led by Brendan McGowan who won his match by 2-holes against Shane Larkin, he was followed by Darren Donoghue who lost out to Jack Healy by 3 and 1 next up was Barry Cunningham who went down by 4 and 3 to Tony Bree in the penultimate match Bryan Cribben lost his match against Ronan Hehir by 2 and 1, in the bottom match Stephen Monteith halved his match against Ronan Mahon when called in, non playing members were Francis Coffey and Liam McElgunn and they were captained by Ciaron McCauley. So it was not to be for the members from Ballyconnell to bring back its first green pennant.

Charlie Smyth was selected to represent Ireland at the Italian Under-16 Boys' Open in Golf Club Biella Le Betulle, near Turin from 31st August to 2nd September 2022, the others on the squad were Fionn Dobbin (Malone Golf Club), Calum Duane (Naas Golf Club), Finlay Eager (Royal Belfast Golf Club), Evan Monaghan (Tullamore Golf Club) and Sean Reddy (Douglas Golf Club) they were managed by Peter English and captained by Liam Troy.
Charlie Smyth was selected on the Ulster Under-16 team to participate in the Interprovincial Championships at Hilton Templepatrick Golf Club from 18th and 19st July 2022, the others on the squad were Finlay Eager (Royal Belfast Golf Club), Harry McArdle (Warrenpoint Golf Club), Evan Hogg (Belvoir Park Golf Club), Michael Wilson (Masseereen Golf Club) and Stuart Nesbitt (Royal Portrush Golf Club) the non-travelling reserve was Garrett Daly-Shaw (Holywood Golf Club) they were managed by Tiarnan McLarnon from Massereene Golf Club and captained by Trevor Lewers from Portstewart Golf Club.
Lorna and Lisa made history in Ladies Armature Golf when on 26th April they were selected to represent Great Britain & Ireland, together with Danielle McVeigh from Royal Co. Down Golf Club, inthe 36th Curtis Cup match against the United States at Essex County Club, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts from June 11th to 13th September, 2010. The team Captain is Mary McKenna from Donabate Golf Club. At the tender age of 15-years they became the youngest players ever to be selected for this by-annual event.
Lorna Maguire (pictured above) playing of a +3 handicap at the age of 14-years has played in the Connacht Girls Champion in 2007; won the Scottish U-16 Strokeplay Champion in 2007 and won the Hermitage Scratch Cup in 2007 and 2008. She won the French U-18 Championship 2008 and the Lancôme Irish Ladies Close Champion in 2008. She was a member of Winning Irish Team at Girls' European Team Championship in 2009 she won the French U-21 Champion the same year, she won the Helen Holm Scottish Open Strokeplay Championship in 2009 and the Woodenbridge Scratch Cup. Her Representative Honours are also remarkable, she has played Ulster Girls: 2007, 2008, 2009; she has participated in the Girls Home International Team: 2007, 2008 and the Girls European Team: 2008, 2009.
One of her "Best Golfing Memories" is playing for the Junior Ryder Cup Team in 2008. A member of the G.B. & I. Vagliano Team in 2009 and the Junior Solheim Cup Team again in 2009. She retained the French U-21 Open Championship in Paris on 5th April 2010, when se beat the Norwegian Tonje Daffinrud by 3 and 2, she also retained the Esmond Trophy. I'm sure we will see he on the Solheim Cup Team when played in Ireland in 2011.
Sister Lisa (pictured left) also playing of a +2 handicap started her winning-ways at an even younger age, she won the YMG Grand Masters Champion in 2005 and followed that by winning the U-12 U.S. World Golf Champion in 2006 together with Midland Girls Champion the same year. In 2007 she won the Ulster Midland and Leinster Girls Championship. She was Girls Order of Merit Winner the same year and was a British Girls Semi-Finalist in 2007. In 2008 she was Irish Ladies Close Leading Qualifier and Runner-Up in the same Championship won by her sister .
The following year she put things to right when being leading qualifier and winner of the Lancôme Irish Ladies Close Champion she also won the Irish Women's Open Strokeplay Champion and together with Sister Lorna was a member of the winning Irish Team at Girls' European Team Championship in 2009. Her Representative Honours are compatible to Lorna's, she was on the Ulster Girls; team in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Played in the Girls'; Home Internationals in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Was on the winning Girls European Team in 2008 and 2009 a member of the Junior Ryder Cup Team in 2008. Was on the G. B. & I. Vagliano Team and the Junior Solheim Cup Team in 2009.
2005 Lady Captain Ann Harte and her Captain’s Prize winner Maura McClaffey qualified for the Volkswagen/Irish Independent Lady Captain’s Classic in this scotch foursomes format. It was off to the National Finals at The Heritage Golf Club on Monday 3rd October where they were paired with the Castle Barna pair of Kathleen Elliott and Nell Scally.
Slieve Russell Golf Club were runners-Up in the Ulster Fourball Trophy in 1998 when they were narrowly defeated by Moyola Park Golf Club in the final on 27thSeptember. The team was Anthony McBride, Kevin Mone, John Ronayne, Larry O'Shea, Brian Hopkins, Brian Johnston, Oliver Brady, Michael Ryan, P. J. Browne, Brian Finley, Tony Doonan, Ray McDwyer and Cormac Dunne. They went on to win it in 1999.
Lady Captain Deirdre Forde, Captain Paudge Tobin and President Patricia Quinn, qualified for the National Final of the Mercedes-Benz Irish Independent Executive Golf Classic at The K Club on August 12th 2002.
Lady Captain Doreen O'Driscoll, Captain Dr. Sean Burke and Brendan McGowan came 5th in the National Final of Mercedes Benz-Irish Independent Executive Trophy at the K Club on the 13th of August 2001. They returned a score of 73pts. which was 2-shots off the winners.
Lady Captain Doreen O'Driscoll and her Captain's Prize winner Phil Rice qualified for the Volkswagen-Irish Independent Lady Captains' Classic National Finals at Druid's Glen on the 1st October 2001.
