Clare Hurlers may not have lived up to many people’s expectations of doing the two-in-a-row, but the little club from West Clare achieved the remarkable two-in-a-row when capturing the Pierce Purcell Shield at Carton House in 2014 last recorded by St. Anne’s Golf Club in 1995.
They had a close-call against Woodstock Golf Club in the Munster Final when down by 2-holes with 3 to play in the last match they clinched it on the 18th.

They had beaten Rossmore in the All-Ireland Semi-Final at Royal Tara Golf Club the previous year so there could be no love-lost between the two clubs making it an interesting decider.
They were led out again by Kevin Hynes with Damian Sexton who halved their match against Bernard Gilbane with Dermot McMahon, they were followed by Evan Talty with Mervin Hehir who had a 2-hole win over Gerry McMahon with Rory McDonnell 2, next up was Fergal Hehir with Martin Glenny who had a comfortable 5 and 4 win over Padraig Trappe with Brendan Casey, the penultimate match of Aiden Sexton with Stephen Guilfoyle saw history in the making when the recorded a 6 and 4 win over Adrian Trappe with Alan Finnegan, the bottom match of Eric Murrihy with Niall Heeney was halved against John McKenna with Malachy Deery when called-in.
They were captained by 27-year old Micheál Talty, who was part of the 2013 Champions and was assisted by Micheál Hehir.
Well done to the West Clare Club from this beautiful part of the country, if and when you visit the club you will find the members among the most friendly you will ever meet.

Spanish Point won their first Munster pennant when they beat East Cork Golf Club by 3½ matches to 1½ matches at Bandon Golf Club to win the Pierce Purcell Shield on Sunday 14th July 2013. What an achievement for a small 9-hole club in West Clare where football is their game and Evan Talty indeed played Senior Football for his county and played in Croker in an All-Ireland Clubs Final, he said after they won the All-Ireland Final that his nerves on the first tee was worse than playing in Croke Park.
They made the long journey to Royal Tara Golf Club to compete in the National Deciders where they met Ulster Champions Rossmore Golf Club in the All-Ireland Semi-Final on Wednesday 17th September. They were led by Evan Talty with Mervyn Hehir who beat Michael Quaid with Darren Connolly by 4 and 3 they were followed by Michael Hehir with brother Fergal had a 2 and 1 win over John Heffernan with Alan Finnegan next up was Anthony Garrihy with Aidan Sexton who halved their match against Padraig Trappe with Brendan Casey the penultimate match of Michael Talty with Stephen Guilfoyle was also halved against Adrian Trappe with Dermot McMahon the bottom match of Conor O’Loughlin with Kevin Hayes went 2 and 1 against John McKenna with Malachy Deery and with it their place in the All-Ireland Final.
They met Connacht Champions Claremorris Golf Club in the decider on the Friday, this time they were led out by Anthony Garrihy with Aidan Sexton who had a 4 and 2 win over D. Costello with P. Kenna next up was Evan Talty with Mervyn Hehir who halved their match against Declan Lamb with David Rattigan, they were followed by the brothers Michael and Fergal Hehir who recorded a convincing 4 and 3 win over Kevin McDonagh with Martin O’Brien the penultimate match of Michael Talty with Stephen Guilfoyle was an even more convincing 5 and 3 win over M. Conway with John Haverty in the bottom match Conor O’Loughlin with Kevin Hynes halved their match against Malachy Monaghan with Pat Coyne when called-in. Other members of the team were Brendan Coyne, Seamus McMahon, Martin Glenny, john Meere, Martin Dormer and Eric Murrihy they were managed by Michael O'Connoe and Eoghan O'Loughlin.
And so history was made with the club Captain Eoghan O’Loughlin acting as manager ironically Eoghan had managed the Woodstock team that won the Pierce Purcell Shield at Castlerock Golf Club in 2011.

Spanish Point Golf  Club won the Munster Final of the Holmpatrick Cup in 2005.

Prior to 2001:

Spanish Point won the Munster Country Clubs Championship in 2001. The team was Jim Finnerty, Pat Keane, Ciaran og MacMathuna, David Reidy, Brendan Sexton, Michael Healy, Aiden Moloney, Seamus Cleary, David Fitzgerald and the team manager was Peter Hennessy.

Spanish Point Golf won the Munster Final of the Holmpatrick Cup in 2005, with Michael O'Brien and Ollie McNamara.

The Ladies of Spanish Point won the Munster section of the Huzzar Ladies Foursomes in 1983.

The long standing Secretary/Manager has had a remarkable 7 holes-in-one in his lifetime on his home course, can anybody beat that?

History of Spanish Point

Instituted 1896 affiliated 1915

There is some confusion as to when golf was first played at Milltown Malbay, The "Golfers Guide" 1897, records the club as being " West Clare Golf Club" and "This is a nine-hole course, finely situated on the shores of Malbay. Hazards are hills, sandpits and bents. It is free to visitors staying at the Atlantic Hotel". An entrance fee of two shillings and six pence with a similar annual subscription is listed.
Like so many other clubs, the early records are missing and the club credits its foundation to Robert B. Barclay and Capt. Ernest Ellis, in 1912. However, it would appear golf was played here prior to 1912.
