History of Kilkee

Instituted 1889 affiliated 1910

There is some confusion as to when golf was first played at Kilkee Golf Club. There is a reference in The "Irish Golfer" on 18th October, 1899, it refers to "some ten years ago, Mr. Alexander Shaw might have been seen learning the alphabet of golf on the breezy down of Kilkee, under the tuition of Mr. Douglas Driver, of  Daller

Others would argue that it was the Summer course of Limerick Golf Club (founded in 1891) before they moved to Lahinch.
The "Golfing Annual" 1895-96 records, "A nine-hole course, with good bunkers and hazards, has been laid out along the cliffs across the Bay from Kilkee

The "Sporting Holiday Guide" 1897 records "The club has only recently been formed (May 1896), and the course was laid out in June, a nine-hole one and is situated along the cliffs.

Either was the original club floundered, in 1903 a new club was formed, with the Rev. R. S. S. Ross Lewin as Hon. Secretary. The club remained at that location for thirty-four years until it moved to its present location at the east end.
