Rathsallagh Club Crest

Ryder Cup Player Christy O’Connor Jnr. and Peter McEvoy were commissioned to design a Championship Golf Course for the Rathsallagh Golf Club.  The course was opened for play by Peter Thomson CBE in 1995 and even since then has been highly acclaimed by the golfing press:  " Augusta without the Azalea. As good a layout and challenge as you will find anywhere in Irish Golf" (John Redmond). "a true championship course" ( Christy O’Connor Jnr ) .

Having been a farmer all his life the previous owner Joe O’Flynn Snr. prides himself on extremely high grassland management standards, which enables play throughout the year.  With the addition of the well know teaching PGA professional Brendan McDaid in 1999 Rathsallagh now boasts a top class Golf Academy.  With facilities such as pitching and putting greens, covered driving range and the latest A Star computer aided coaching and teaching system.  Rathsallagh is now one of the premier Clubs in Ireland, it is one its Members can be proud of, and it has become a new way of life for Joe and his family.

Designed by Christy O'Connor Jnr. and Peter McEvoy the golf course at Rathsallagh has rapidly taken its place as one of the top golf courses in Ireland: Officially listed in the top 30 (out of 415) of Irelands Finest Golf Courses(J Redmond Gill &H MacMillan 2006).  Located in West Wicklow and often referred to as one of "Irelands Best Hidden Gems " Rathsallagh is close to Kildare and only 1 hour from the centre of Dublin and Dublin Airport . The K Club,  PGA National, are less than 30 minutes drive while Mount Juliet, Druids Glen, The Heritage and Carton are all less than 1 hour away.

Home to important domestic Tournaments, many regard Rathsallagh as the best parkland course in Ireland.  Measuring 7200 yards from the Medal Tees Rathsallagh is one of the best laid out courses you could play, several lakes and small streams meander their way across the fairways creating a USPGA feel about the design and the greens are immaculate to putt on. Or as one of our visitors commented recently - like putting on velvet. The undulating countryside creates the perfect golf terrain which proves a great test for golfers but is fair to all.

The Club house overlooks the 9th, 10th and 18th holes and is the perfect location to watch your partners finish their round from. Excellent food and beverages await you in this fine facility upon your return. Our Golf Shop stocks an excellent selection of clothing, balls and accessories, and Club, Shoe and Buggy and Electric Golf Cart Hire are all available on request.

History of Rathsallagh

Founded 1994, affiliated 1994.

What the Club tells us:

Rathsallagh Golf Club reopened in June 2016 having been brought back to its previous splendour after 18 months of hard work and investment under new ownership. The magnificent course, which first opened in 1994, was designed by Peter McEvoy and the late Christy O’Connor Jnr. It sits in beautiful parkland near Dunlavin Co Wicklow with mature woodland lining all the fairways.

Over the years it has challenged and delighted golfers of all abilities. In September 2017, the course was reconfigured so that play begins and ends in front of the clubhouse and a new Par 3 hole was built in the woods between the old 1st and 2nd holes bridging a small river. The old 10th hole (index 1) is now the opening hole – so the ‘wow factor’ is evident right from the very first shot. The re-routing occurs during the middle of the game and players will intertwine the ‘old’ back and front nines for a totally fresh experience.

Rathsallagh is a golf course built to championship standard, routed over rolling terrain and with a number of burns, ditches and ponds that bring water into play on several holes. Hundreds of mature trees flank the fairways. The bunkers are always challenging - such is the brilliance of its layout it is often described as offering some of the best bunkers in Ireland both in terms of construction and intelligent placement.  The condition of the course is almost second to none, the greens were built to the highest USGA specification. The course is beautifully maintained by our Head Greenkeeper's Sean Farrell & Shane Daniels and their team.

Use of the landscape is a key feature of Rathsallagh and this is truly apparent as the golfer ambles through the exciting newly reconfigured course layout. When golfers finish on the 18th hole, it is just a few steps to reach the sanctuary of the clubhouse veranda. A perfect place to enjoy an after-golf drink and meal, with spectacular views of the course and rolling Wicklow landscape.

A popular choice for all kinds of functions and golf days.  Rathsallagh Golf & Country Club has been recently ranked 57th best Golf Course in Ireland and 27th best Parkland by Irish Golfer Magazine. In County Wicklow, it is rated 2nd best parkland course by Top 100 Golf Courses Ltd and 3rd best by Irish Golfer Magazine. This award is a reflection of not only the golf course but of our clubhouse, high quality service and friendly Staff.

“As one of Ireland’s most natural and elegant landscapes, it is excellent to see Rathsallagh back in the Irish golfing fold.”

(The Examiner 26th Sept 2017 - Kevin Markham)

Joe O’Flynn Snr, having sold his Dairy Farm on the out skirts of Cork City purchased Rathsallagh as a 570-acre Beef and Tillage farm in 1978. In the late 80’s he decided, that he needed to diversify, and set about building a par-3 practice course on the parklands either side of the main avenue to Rathsallagh House. In the early 90’s after a night at the bar with the famous Peter Thomson CBE, he had a dream and decided to extend the original concept and contracted Christy O’Connor Jnr and Peter McEvoy to design a Championship Golf Course at Rathsallagh. The course was opened for play by Peter Thomson in 1995 and ever since has been highly acclaimed by the golfing press: "Augusta without Azalea…as good a layout and challenge as you will find anywhere in Irish Golf". John Redmond " a true championship course" Christy O’Connor Jnr.
