Roscrea golf club Tipperary

Roscrea Golf Course

Roscrea has been in its present location at Derryvale, since 1911. The members always wanted to extend to 18-holes which eventually became possible when 40 acres of bog-land became available in 1978 and two other parcels of land were acquired at a combined cost of £96,000.
Dr. Arthur Spring was commissioned to design the new layout and he is quoted as saying "The gentle rolling terrain was ideal golfing land and I was aware on first inspection that the final product was going to be an exciting challenge for golfers of all handicap categories". The design, involved, the construction of 11-new, holes and were completed on time for the centenary celebrations in 1992.
Back in the 70’s two members of Roscrea went into the record books when it was a 9-hole course. Dan Hogan played 204-holes in seventeen hours on the 4th August 1978, during which he carded 30 birdies, one eagle and only five double-bogeys. Before that Alfie Clarke played 157-holes in one day and the following year he surpassed himself by playing 201-holes.
Roscrea is renowned for its warm welcome to visiting golfers. My lasting memory of the hospitality extended at Roscrea was when returning from playing Ballybunion and Lahinch we called into the clubhouse on the off chance of getting out on a Sunday afternoon, the weekend compotation was in full swing. However we were directed out on to the 12th tee box where we were informed there would be a gap in the timesheet. Hard to, believe but these things, happen in golf.

History of Roscrea
Instituted 1892 affiliated 1911
As with so many other older clubs, the early records of Roscrea are missing. It would appear there were two clubs in the Roscrea area and they ran into difficulties around the turn of the century.
The Irish "Golfers Guide", 1910 records, "This club was started again in 1904, the course having being laid out some years previously, but lapsed for want of members. One and a half miles, from Roscrea. Hon. Secretary, Captain R. A. Bolton, Dungar Park, Roscrea". The following year, The "Irish Field" reported on 5th August "The Roscrea district is very wisely amalgamating the two existing private clubs and establishing a public club. The representative meeting called to discuss the matter decided on taking Derryvale as the site of the new course."
The "Nenagh Guardian" on 17th November 1894, records "An Inter-club match between Nenagh and Roscrea, which lists the Roscrea team as Powell, Smith, Bridge, Ely, Eaton and Perry."
The "Irish Golfers" 1897 tells us "The links is at Golden Grove, one and a half miles Roscrea and there are nine-holes, the longest 420 yards and shortest 90 yards. The greenkeeper has a comfortable cottage, where there is room for members, and tea is provided". The President is given as W. P. H. Lloyd Vaughan, D. L., the Hon.. Secretary was J. Robin, J. P., Ballaghmore Castle, and the Treasurer was S. E. Smith.
What the Club tells us:
Nestled in the shadows of the Slieve Bloom Mountains in the geographical centre of Ireland, Roscrea Golf Club, one of Ireland's oldest, was founded in 1892 and is the only Golf Course in Ireland with direct access off the main Dublin/Limerick (M7) Road.
Situated on the Dublin side of Roscrea, and in its present location at Derryvale since 1911, this course was originally designed as a nine hole parkland course. There was always a desire to extend to 18-holes which became a possibility following the purchase of a further 40 acres of land.
Kerry's Dr Arthur Spring was commissioned to design a new 18 hole course of championship standard. This he did to perfection with the inclusion of sand based greens built to the highest international approved standards. Eleven new holes were constructed and finished in time for the clubs centenary celebrations in 1992.
Dr. Spring is quoted as saying; "The gentle rolling terrain was ideal golfing land and I was aware on first inspection that the final product was going to be an exciting challenge for golfers of all handicap categories."
Roscrea's greens have been acclaimed by amateur and professional alike as being of the highest quality. It's par-3s are superb; the fourth, for example, requires a shot over water to find the green. The course also offers numerous challenging longer holes, with the fairway of the par-4 15th hole lined with an out of bounds on the left and trees to the right.
Among the record breaking members at Roscrea are Dan Hogan and Alfie Clarke. In the 70's, when it was a 9 hole course, Dan played 204 holes on the 4th August 1978 in seventeen hours. He carded 30 birdies, one eagle and just five double-bogeys. Prior to this Alfie Clarke played 157 holes in a day, beating his own record the following year by playing 201 holes.
