History of Tullamore

Instituted 1896 affiliated 1899

The Tullamore Golf Club published a brochure on the history of the club in 1935 which records "Golf was introduced into Tullamore in the year 1886 by Colonel R. A. Craig, when on a visit to the Rectory. A few holes in a field on the Geashill Road represented the first links in the neighbourhood, and there Colonel Craig and a few friends drove their gutta balls with the old-fashioned clubs of the period. After a short time they changed the scene of operations to the fields near the ruin behind the Distillery, where they were, joined by a few military officers. The next move was to Timmycross. A small club was formed and a regular course was made, a very rough and hilly affair, but productive of good fun for a couple of years. At the end of that time move No. 3 was effected to the racecourse at Ballykilmurry, where a pleasant little nine-hole course was laid out and a small pavilion erected."

The "Irish Field" on the 29th of August, 1925, reports "I hear that at Brookfield only a couple of miles from the town, the club can get sufficient land at reasonable rent to lay out eighteen-holes." The club brochure tells us "a site near Tullamore was needed, too, and it was found at Brookfield, which largely through the efforts of Mr. Henry F. Brennan, was secured from Lady Bury. A new eighteen-hole course was laid out with the assistance of Captain Lionel Hewson who was ably assisted by Mr. J. S. McCall of the club, who spared no effort."
