Golf was first played at Dundalk as far back as 1895, when the 13th Hussars were stationed there. The semi-club died a natural death from want of support, as the Hussars were based at the Curragh before being transferred to Dundalk and later to Dublin.
The game was revived in December 1904, the first Captain was Mr. V. S. Carroll, and Mr. P. L. MacArdle was the Hon. Secretary. The course was nine-hole and located at Deer Park. It was, laid out by G. Coburn, professional at Portmarnock Golf Club.
The "Irish Field" on 21st October, 1922, reports that Tom Shannon and James Martin had laid out a fine new course for the new Dundalk Golf Club "It is very pleasantly situated and commands grand views of Dundalk Bay and the Mourne Mountains. The course is just 6000 yd’s long and is laid out in two loops". The National Senior Mixed Foursomes were staged at Dundalk in 2000. This fine course has been chosen to host the Irish Ladies Open Strokeplay in 2002 and the Ladies Home Internationals and Leinster Youths in 2005 its Centenary Year.
