Young Michael McHugh will always remember his selection by the GUI as the Irish representative in the Junior Open Championship at Crail in July 2000. Only 15 years of age and playing off a handicap of 3 he took on the 70 of the best young Turks and finished 12th, a great performance in a top-class International field. After the Championship, the R & A treated them like royalty at St. Andrews, where they got to see the" greats" of the past, such as Sam Sneed, a young 88-year old, play in the Millennium Open. Then they watched the Tiger make history on the old course. Will he be one of those young Turks to tame the Tiger in years to come?

John F. Slattery won the Michael Hennelly Award in 1995 with 115 points.

History of Ballinasloe

Instituted 1894 affiliated 1894

Although the present Club dates from 1905, it would appear there was an earlier club in Ballinasloe as the Irish Golfer of 11th October states that "A Club was formed in 1894 and links were procured near the town, in some pasture fields long lain fallow

In the Golfing Annual 1909-10, the Hon Secretary is given as P. S. Goodwin and the course is given as nine-hole course half a mile from the station. The land was given free by the Earl of Cloncarty at Garbally Demesne. The course was designed by Lionel Hewson, and looked after by Father Cogavin. The Club moved to its present location at Rosgloss, in 1937.
