Deer Park Golf Course

Deer Park Club Crest

Deer Park Golf is situated in the picturesque peninsula of Howth, a fishing village north of Dublin city and less than 30 minutes from Dublin Airport.

Set against the magnificent back drop of Howth Castle, and famed for the stunning views of Dublin City, the North Dublin Coastline and beyond.

For over four decades this property has been very popular with golfers of all skill levels. This beautiful estate includes 2 traditional golf courses: the Deer Park 18-hole and St Fintan's 9-hole, and the highly challenging 18-hole Pitch & Putt course. There is also a 3-hole par 3 Academy course, solely for the development of junior golf in Dublin.

Opened in 1973 by Christopher Gaisford St Lawrence of Howth Castle, the Deer Park course made golfing history in Ireland by becoming its first public golf course.

Since then, the Fred Hawtree designed layout has given much enjoyment to golfers from Dublin and further afield for over four decades, with many Dubliners learning how to play here in Deer Park Golf.

The par 72 has generous fairways and beautifully maintained greens and plays 6293 metres for Men and 4678 metres for Ladies, offering as much challenge as it does reward.

Under the watchful eye of long-time Head Greenkeeper, Gerry Hudson and his highly experienced greenkeeping team, the Deer Park 18-hole course is beautifully maintained year round and offers a great opportunity for groups and individuals to play a round of golf in a relaxed and friendly environment, with the stunning backdrop of the Dublin’s suburbs and countryside.

St Fintan’s 9 Hole

A varied and challenging 9-hole course.

Offering an equally challenging and enjoyable experience to the Deer Park course, St Fintan’s with its meandering fairways and panoramic views of the Dublin coastline plays 2508 metres with a par 36.

Many golfers feel like they have gotten the better of the course until they reach the Index 1 final hole. A wonderful uphill par 4, that looks and feels like a Par 5 that requires skill and precision to gain a score against the course.

This course is ever popular with members and guests who want to get out for a quick 9 holes late in the evening or after work.

History of Deer Park

In the year of 1973 in an idyllic setting at Howth Demense, Captain Christopher Gaisford St Lawerence created a nine-hole Deer Park Golf course to an excellent design by Fred Hawtree. History was made in Ireland, as the course was the first privately owned golf course, which would be open to the public. History was made again when a group of regular golfers who enjoyed playing the course met to discuss the possibility of forming a Golf Club at the Deer Park Course. The seed was sown and thus a long sequence of events.

The first meeting was held in June 1974 and the founder members present were: Jim McIntyre, Joe Doran, Joe Brennan, Cormac O’Sullivan, Louis Caffrey, Colm Harmon.
It was agreed to proceed with the formation of a Club subject to agreement with the course owner Captain Gaisford St Lawerence. This meeting was held in July 1974 and it was agreed to make enquires to the Golfing Union of Ireland about the formation of the Club an affiliation to the Golfing Union of Ireland. Mr Jim McIntyre was nominated as secretary of the provisional committee and would undertake to enquires. During the period July-August 1974 the provisional committee achieved the following
(1). Drafted a constitution, with the assistance of Pat Ruddy, golf j journalist with the Evening Herald and also received help from the Leinster branch of the G.U.I
(2). Passed the necessary resolution seeking membership of the Golfing Union of Ireland.
(3). Completed the application papers and submission to the Golfing Union of Ireland.
On the 9th of September 1974 Mr Jim McIntyre recieved a letter from Mr Ivan Dickson informing him that agreement in principle was reached on Deer Park’s application subject to our constitution being agreed by senior counsel.
