Warrenpoint Golf Course

Warrenpoint Club Crest

Founded in 1893 was originally a 9-hole course and extended to 18-holes in 1920, the latest redesign was undertaken by Pat Ruddy & Tom Craddock resulting in the splendid 18-hole Parkland course that is here today.

The course measures 6,173 yards with a Par 71 and standard scratch 70 off the men's tees, remarkably the course record is 61 but when one considers it was set by Paddy Gribben in 1998 when playing off +3 it is understandable. Warrenpoint has produced some of the countries most famous golfers, with Ronan Rafferty and Paddy Gribben both playing Walker Cup before joining the professional ranks. Alison Coffey has represented Europe and Ireland several times. Warrenpoint has also achieved one of the most remarkable records in Irish Golf in 1987 they captured 4 of the 5 All-Ireland Bulmers Cups & Shield Finals at Clandeboye. They captured the Bulmers Senior Cup, the Bulmers Barton Shield, the Jimmy Bruen Shield and the Pierce Purcell Shield only missing out on the Bulmers Junior Cup that was collected by Downpatrick, making it an all Ulster affair that year.

Warrenpoint has stunning views of the Lough and the Mountains of Mourne, its signature hole is the 17th played up hill with tight tree lined fairway when the second shot is played to an plateau green, this hole will test the most confident of golfers and has often destroyed many a good card.

Warrenpoint has a fine clubhouse where the golfers every need is catered for and the visitor is assured of a warm welcome. Nigel Shaw has a well-stocked Pro. Shop that is well worth a visit.

History of Warrenpoint

Instituted 1893 affiliated 1894

The "Golfing Annual" 1894-95 lists Warrenpoint for the first time. It records a foundation date as 1893, with Major Hall as President and Colonel Cattell as Captain, with seventy-five members. It reports "The course of nine-holes is one minute's walk from Warrenpoint Railway Station. There are plenty of hazards in the shape of roads, ditches and hedges. There is a good clubhouse."

It would appear the club suffered a setback around 1897 to 1905 as the Golfing Annual 1904-5 reports "The course is being laid out on land belonging to Captain Hall D. L., J. P."

The "Irish Golfers Guide" 1910 records that the nine-hole course was five minutes' walk from the station, which would indicate that from its inception in 1893, the course was located very close to its original site. The Hall family were also very closely associated with the institution and revival of the club. In 1925, the course was extended to an eighteen-hole under the direction of Captain Lionel Hewson."
