Members Achievements
Cloughaneely Golf Club won the Ulster Final of the Musgrave's Club Challenge in aid of Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children, which raised in excess of 130,000 Euro. They beat Castle Hume on their home course on a count-back with 85 points each. They went to South Africa in November 2002 to represent Ulster along with the three other provincial winners to play in the National Finals.
History of Cloughaneely
Cloughaneely Golf Club began in Falcarragh in 1996. The founding members were local people from the parish who came together to build a beautiful 9 Hole Golf Course with wonderful views of Muckish Mountain, Falcarragh Back Strand and Horn Head with majestic Errigal in the distance. The Golf Course was officially opened on 31 May 1997 by the President of the Golfing Union of Ireland, Peter O Hara, they celebrated the club’s silver anniversary in 2022.
The golf course is situated in the rolling meadows of the Ballyconnell Estate, where the Olphert family, landlords, lived for many centuries. In later years it was known as the grounds of Coláiste Bhríde, a preparatory college for girls (1928-1961), and Holy Cross College, a boarding school for boys (1965-1986). Udáras na Gaeltachta purchased the estate from the Diocese of Raphoe in 1988 and the land where the golf course is situated has been leased by the golf club. The popular ‘Falcarragh Park Run’ route now borders the golf course and attracts a lot of walkers and runners throughout the year.
The beautiful 9 Hole Parkland Golf Course was designed by Michael Doherty, former professional in the City of Derry Golf Club. The challenging par 70 course is a test for any golfer’s handicap and at the same time offers plenty of scope for the beginner. New Members are always welcome.
